meduz' is an other writing for méduse, wich is a french word for "jellyfish" . It's also like this that a friend of mine call me, 'cause my true surname is Mehdi .

"Nom de famille" is either last name or surname, just like "prénom" is either first name or christian name

Not necessarily. I think name alone can refer to your first name, your last name or your full name. Up to you!

It's true. If somebody says, "What's your name?" you have to figure out from the context what they want, or you can choose to give them whatever you want. Usually, in the US at least, if you're introducing yourself to somebody, you give your first name, unless it's a formal situation. Surname is generally your family name or last name. I hope that clarifies things .

Stef - I'm glad to hear that you weren't torturing Meduz' beyond what he's capable of handling. It would have been sad to lose a new English speaker so soon! I probably would have gone to France and broken your legs or something . Of course, you know I'm only joking.

*random anecdote* I had a little chat with an american girl studying in my college this morning. She came from Seattle, and I asked her what she thought about the french classes she was taking and the teachers she had compared to how it was in America.

Unsurprisingly, she told me she prefered the way it was back home and that most of the classes she followed here in France this semester felt more like high school to her. Isn't that depressing?

She did not seem as used to incompetence as we have come to be... lucky, lucky girl.

A friend of mine studied one year in the U.S.A. when he was 18. He had already followed in Belgium the year he followed there and, for him, no way : the school in U.S.A. is definitively giving a lower level than Belgian school and he could not understand how the students can go to the university after that.

He followed classes in one of the best school of the place he lived in the U.S.A. .
